| 05.06.05 - Weekly bulletin
by Trevor Stanning There were many intriguing results from round 7 of
the 2005 Championship. Your roving reporter noticed the following. The
pairing Rothlisberger v Sharman was preceded by pre-game discussion
where they were analysing at the table from a book being held by Scott.
When the official game started Scott was able to pull off a nice win.
All above board and a most interesting game where Marcel had two very
active bishops that eventually succumbed to pawns and rooks.
On board 12, Eugene Schon put a huge dent in Andrew Cantos’ rating,
and he will repeat the dose to many others I warn now. Next door to that
match, Howard Liston struggled to a draw against another youngster,
Derek Yu.
Lee Forace has brought some rating points from the ACT pool and Sam
Dalton helped himself to a small share via a draw.
The un-rated Efrain Tionko may have got under the Arbiters guard at
the start of the tourney; this week he knocked off the Prez, Rolf Exner.
Bob Wakely has recently returned to the Club and his 1575 rating
could take a battering from well-coached Alan Glenton.
However, an old upstart, Devrim van Dijk, seems to have lost his
magic a bit and could only manage a draw with the much lower rated
junior Udit Thakur.
Sally Yu continues to improve and took a full point from Sasha
Simonov.
I have saved the best for last. I reckon Frank Benjamin (989) has
lost to Eric Neymanis (1387) on more than 20 occasions over their long
careers at the Club. Well done Frank for the break-through.
Just a reminder that the 8th and final round of the Championship is
on the 17th June.
On 10th June there is a free catch-up night in preparation for the
VIC OPEN week-ender 11-13 June.
