Club captain's News & Weekly Bulletins - May 2005

30.05.05 - Weekly bulletin by Trevor Stanning

There were no surprises on the first 10 boards for round 6 (although, at the time of writing the postponed game Le v Dizdarevic has yet to be played). On board 11 the erratic Arie Meydan let Garry Lycett take the full point. And then from board 15 there was a rash of unexpected results; Nikolayevsky took ½ a point from Liston, Whittick ½ a point from Forace (Lee is lsited on the NSW ratings list), Schon a full point from Chmiel, Tionko ½ a point from Stones, D Yu a full point from Devrim VD, Rengan V ½ a point from Wakely, Glenton ½ a point from Wilson, Dalton a full point from Omeragic, Zacharczenko ½ a point from Chong, Thakur ½ a point from Umber, Tim Feng ½ a point from Burzic. That is 10 games side-by-side where a mini or full upset occurred.
The rest of the pairings in the lower part of B went much to plan, although I suggest keeping an eye on Linden Lyons as he is reading chess books as preparation.

Forthcoming events include the VIC OPEN week-ender. Many local members have taken advantage of the early-bird entry fee. New ratings will be published in early June.

22.05.05 - Weekly bulletin by Trevor Stanning

Round 5 of the Championship saw a couple of surprise results on the top boards . Dusan Stojic drew with IM Peter Froehlich in a game that went well after midnight. A much shorter game was Denis Bourmistrov’s loss to Andrew Cantos as Denis let a piece hang for no compensation. But I suppose most eyes were widened by Svetozar Stojics fine win over Domagoj Dragicevic. It would have been a happy Stojic car on the journey home, albeit in the small hours of the morning. Keith Jenkins again showed fighting qualities to beat the higher rated Howard Liston; while Elliott Renzies win over Devrim van Dijk showed that adults too can benefit from coaching.

George Umber took time out to check the provisional rating of Efrain Tionko and seemed to go away partly happy. Eugene Schon continued his good form to upset new member Ramo Burzic. A huge win by Alaric Indranada over life member Eric Neymanis puts up warning flags that here is yet another rapidly improving junior. And veteran Anton Nincevic struggled to hold the VIC U10 champion Yi Liu to a draw. Newcomer Linden Lyons win against Aingaran Somaskanthan came as a big surprise; the form of these two bears watching. Finally, Andrew Whitticks win against the very solid Peter Schulzer completed a night of very competitive chess with upsets aplenty.

The early bird Discount entry fee of $45 for the 05 Vic Open Chess Championship is set to run out May 29.Now is the time to put in your entry and pick up the discount See details and entry forms on the website www.boxhillchess.org.au/vicchess.

17.05.05 - Weekly bulletin by Trevor Stanning

It has taken 4 rounds of the 2005 Box Hill Club Championship to throw up a clear leader, and we now have Dusan Stojic (the 2005VIC U18 Champion) showing a clean pair of heels on 4/4; a good effort by the 7th seed.

On board Arie Meydan sored half-a-point from Domagoj Dragicevic, and repaired his rating in the process. The first big upset occurred on board 6 where Svetozar Stojic took a full point as white against Denis Bourmistrov. The spectators thought Shaun Fielder was going to cause an upset against A Division’s Jusuf Omeragic, but there is more to winning than just being ahead in the opening.

Down on board 25 Vladimir Zacharczenko showed that the hints from Marcel Rothlisberger (where they analysed Vladimir’s previous games in the Championship) were valuable and an upset of Anton Nincevic resulted. I predicted Rob McCulloch would have difficulty against junior Alan Glenton; the game went long into the evening, and ended in a draw cease-fire. As did Thomas Poole commendably against Alan Elliott, and also Linden Lyons v Sasha Simonov.

A battle of the ladies on board 46 saw Shuyu Wang account for the higher rated Natasha Lauder, and next door Michael Tang had a good win over Shananthan Balachandran.

02.05.05 - Weekly bulletin by Trevor Stanning

The Championship round 2 results contained some terrific performances. On board 2 Marcus Raine took a full point from Domagoj Dragicevic, as did Howard Liston from John Nemeth. On board 13 Peter Braham defeated the usually reliable Peter Frost, and I think it must have been contagious as on the next board Nur Yachou was favoured to win, but lost to Keith Jenkins.

We welcomed back Bob Wakely after an absence of 10 years, and he promptly took a full point from our President, Rolf Exner. The Chess VICTORIA Newsletter Editor, Rob McCulloch, must have been shocked to be beaten by Eugene Schon; I wonder if he will report that as news?

Upsets occur on lower boards; we have to look no further than board 30 to see Udit Thakur beaten by Thomas Feng, and on 33 Lawrence Matheson accounted for Vanja Rozenblat.
