Upsets and upstarts
Round 1 of the Championship is always my favourite because the potential
for significant upsets by upstarts is at its greatest.
Gary Lycett returned to his best form to take half a point from Tuan Le
(recent co-winner of the Autumn Cup). Marcel Rothlisberger may be considering
the benefits of a SWISS gambit as he drew with Peter Braham. But it was
on board 16 where the first pall hung in the air. Douglas Stones
proved too much for Peter Frost, and now will challenge Tuan Le in round
2; that will be good to watch.
Usually I am writing that Rukman Vijayakumar is an upstart causing an upset,
but Trevor Chong reversed the roles to gather many rating points. Paul Qian
is an upstart who accounted this time for Anton Nincevic; Anton ought to
be pleased that the next few rounds will be easier, but he will need to
watch Sally Yu in round 2.
A huge result on board 23 where newcomer Lynden Lyons drew with Alan Elliott.
Laurie Dalton has been carrying all before him in the lower half of SWISSes,
and it was a real surprise to see Alaric Indranada take a full point from
Laurie.
I am sure round 2 holds the promise of some more competitive chess.
