| 12.03.05 - Weekly
bulletin by Trevor Stanning From quiet beginnings,
the 2005 Box Hill Autumn Cup suddenly exploded into sensations
last night.
The board 1 game ended in a forfeit as modern technology
conspired to leave us one player short out of two.
The board 2 game was headed to a huge upset as Marcus Raine
had the better postion, 15 minutes on his clock, and his
opponent, Domagoj Dragicevic, virtually playing on increment
time. It was not to be. Marcus' friends tried consoling words
afterwards but is there anything that does not sound like salt?
The board 3 game had the same fate as the board 1 game, the
same message-carrier being the cause.
One of the most keenly fought tussles was on board 9 where
George Umber looked to have all the plusses against Gary Lycett;
but a draw was the final result.
A large upset occurred when Jusef Omeragic trapped one of
Howard Liston's pieces behind enemy lines. This is the second
game Howard has squandered a small advantage to press for more
than a draw.
Recent giant-killer Elliott Renzies found the tables turned
as upstart Alan Glenton turned the screws.
A huge result on board 2 when Sam Dalton (1239) held Arie
Meydan 1820) to a draw lasting very late into the evening. And
next door Eugene Schon (1279) could have taken full points
against Joseph Azoulas (1748), but settled for a draw beyond his
bed-time. I am ignoring Susan Sheng's loss to Sam Fell.
New members signed up this week: Devraj Bhattacharya, Stuart
Cuxson, and Efrain Tionko. Welcome to these guys.
Many of our players are off to Ballarat-Begonia tournament
this week-end. Good luck all.
There are new March ratings available, and a recent Chess
VICTORIA newsletter (via e-mail) is a must read.
