1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.g3 c5 5.dxc5 Nc6 6.Bg2 Bxc5 7.0-0 0-0 8.a3 [8.cxd5 This move is recommended by modern theory. Since taking d5 with the knight is not a good idea because of the "bad" bishop on c8, black would have to play with an isolated pawn on d5.] 8...dxc4 9.Qa4 [9.Nbd2 is more settled move and strategically correct move as it develops a piece. Qa4 is a very good practical move.] 9...Na5 10.Ne5!? Qc7! Good move Peter. There is no need to go into complications after Nb3. Black defends everything with a very simple move. [10...Nb3!? Trying to take on c1 with the knight and then play Qd4 attacking white's knight on e5 and the f2 pawn. 11.Qxc4 (11.Ra2 Nxc1 12.Rxc1 Qd4 13.Qxc4 Qxf2+ 14.Kh1 Bd6 15.Rf1 Qe3) 11...Bxf2+ 12.Rxf2 Nxa1 13.Bg5 Qd6 14.Bxf6 gxf6 15.Ng4 f5 16.Nf6+ Kg7 17.Qh4] 11.Bf4 Bd6 12.Nxc4!? Qxc4 [12...Nxc4 13.Rc1 Bxf4 14.Rxc4 Qe5 15.Rxf4 Qxe2] 13.Qxa5 Bxf4 14.gxf4 Qxf4?! Taking on e2 was much better as white's pawn on f4 is weak anyway. Black is still better because they are a pawn up. However white has a compensation because of black's bishop on c8. So White's plan is to develop initiative and black's plan is to consolidate the position, make no weaknesses, swap off and develop their bishop. 15.e3 Qh4 [15...Qg4 Would have been better as black might be able to play b6 on the next move as white's bishop is pinned by the queen and the c8 bishop could come out.] 16.Nd2 Nd5 17.Nf3 Qe7 18.Rac1 b6 19.Qa4 Qe8 This move is not necessary as unfortunately for black white does not have to swap queens. 20.Qd4 Ba6 21.Rfd1 f5 This move makes weaknesses and is not necessary. The pawn on e6 and the e5 square now is ready to be exploit by white. 22.Ne5 [22.Ng5!? is an interesting move. Trying to take advantage of the e6 square. 22...Bb7 23.Nxe6 Qxe6 24.Bxd5 Bxd5 25.Qxd5 Qxd5 26.Rxd5 Rad8] 22...Nf6 A good practical move which does not work if white plays correctly. Black is giving away exchange trying to exploit white squares around white's king. However white can restrict black's play. [22...Bb7] 23.Bxa8 Qxa8 24.Rc7! The most important idea about open file is invasion squares. Well done Philip. 24...Bb7 25.Nd7! This move is trying to exchange off a black piece covering invasion square. [25.Qd7!! This move shows that positional ideas are very important in chess. This move would have been a very good illustration of the above statement. Yes! Two rooks on the seventh are better than the whole queen. 25...Nxd7 26.Rdxd7 Rf6 27.Rxg7+ Kf8 28.Rxh7 Ke8 29.Rce7+ Kd8 30.Rxb7+-] 25...Bh1 26.Nxf6+ gxf6 27.e4! Qxe4 28.Qxe4 Bxe4 29.Rdd7 [29.f4 would have been simpler. However white's position is won anyway.] 29...f4 30.Rxa7 f3 31.Rg7+ Kh8 32.Rge7 Rd8 33.Rad7 Rc8 34.Rc7 Rd8 35.Red7 Rg8+ 36.Kf1 h5 37.Ke1 h4 38.Rd4 Rg1+ 39.Kd2 Rg2 40.Rd8+ Rg8 41.Rxg8+ Kxg8 42.Ke3 Bd5 43.Kf4 e5+ 44.Kf5 e4 45.Re7 Kf8 46.Kxf6 h3 47.Rd7 Bc6 48.Rd8+ Be8 49.Rd5 I thoroughly enjoyed the game. It had everything in it, complications, clever positional ideas, sacrifices, very good moves and small blunders. Enjoy it! 1-0
