Round 1 starts 12.00
Round 2 starts 16.30
Discussion with the Chess Victoria president has clarified the cost involved in accepting non affiliated players in the tournament. It seems that it is not as high as first thought. Therefore we are able to reduce this registration fee to $10

GM Darryl Johansen  aims at World Cup
By Derek Parker, tel 9807 3967, email derekparker@bigpond.com
Grand Master Darryl Johansen, well-known at the Box Hill Chess Club, is set to again step into the international arena when he plays in the World Cup in Libya in June.
Darryl is one of only three Grand Masters in Australia. He has won the Australian championship five times, most recently in 2002, and the Victorian Open competition eight times. He will be a high-profile entrant in the 2004 Victorian Open in June, playing as the top seed in the competition. A week after that, he will be off to Tripoli and the World Cup.
“The World Cup attracts the very best, and the level of play will be extremely high,” he says. “It takes a lot of preparation and effort. I would be lying if I said that I expect to reach the top levels in what is, in effect, a knockout competition. But I hope to be able to show them some tricks they might not have seen, and I think I can give a fair account of myself.
“It’s a matter of staying focused and playing your own game. I am mainly a positional player, and I like to play that style rather than get drawn into someone else’s strategy. And my preparation for the World Cup will involve a lot of revision, especially of my opening tactics. And of course I will be looking at the recent games of possible opponents.
“At a big competition, it can be tempting to think you’ve seen something, and jump on it without thinking it through. That’s a fatal error. Cool is the key.”
Darryl has formerly played on the full-time circuit in Europe, and is familiar with the pressure and tempo of top-class competition. While chess is a central activity for him – he plays a prominent role with Chess Ideas and provides a range of coaching services – he admits that a lack of recent tournament experience could place him at a disadvantage.
“The main problem any Australian chess player faces is that there is simply not much top-level competition play in the country,” he says. “You have to remember that in some countries – especially Russia, which is really the superpower of the game – chess is a very big sport, and the best players play in major competitions nearly all the time. It’s an edge that is hard to match.”
Darryl identifies mental discipline, as much as technical skill, as a crucial factor in world-class play. Although his preparation for the World Cup involves book study and analysis using a computer database and tactics and strategy, he sees the Victorian Open competition as important in getting into ‘tournament mode’.
“There will be some strong players in the state competition, and you can be sure that there will be plenty of people wanting to make their mark,” Darryl says. “So I will be forced to play at my best, and that makes for good preparation for the World Cup.”
Darryl's rating is 2509 and his FIDE rating is 2519
IM Stephen Solomon will be there. Defending Vic open champion and  scourge of Ballarat and Canberra will defend his title. We are hoping for a publicity photo
14.5.04 Arbiter appointed Chess Victoria president Gary Wastell has been appointed arbiter for the 04 Vic Open. He will make the decision to accelerate or not to accelerate closer to the tournament when the field is known
21.05 Amiel Rosario the lion of the ACF bulletin board has entered! Amiel is our first entrant from NSW, we hope to see many more of our friends from across the border
26.05 IM David Smerdon is now also an entrant. He has told me he can hardly wait !
Contrary to the popular belief of the devotees of the bulletin board, the famous Starter is not the organiser
of the 04 Vic Open. The tournament organiser is Gerrit Hartland whose portrait you see on the left. It was painted by his daughter. The portrait was completed
well before last week's Victorian Junior Championships and has aged during and since.

Starter is the one who takes your money and hands
over the prizes at the end
