Strong senior players entered thus ensuring even our best juniors got stretched. We saw entries from Sam Chow, Jesse Sales, Leon Kempen and on the final day Rukman Vijaya Kumar This was the best year yet for the monthly Rookies and Queens Cup event.

The highlights were

Ø      All-time record entries in both September and December.

Ø      Canteen sales were double anything experienced before.

Ø      Leon Kempen, Denis Bourmistrov, Jesse Sales and many other high-rated adults.

Ø      Trophies for all grades of the Rookies event sponsored by George Zaprudsky’s coaching services, ZedChess.

Ø      Schools coach Toni Ziffer brought many new juniors to the Rookies event to give novices their first taste of a chess tournament. Toni was also successful in encouraging parents to attend and get involved, making each event a lovely social occasion.

Tuesday summer swiss

Well the Tuesday Summer swiss did come to the promised to exiting finish. David and Shane locked together on 5 with Luke only half a point behind and this is how it finished. Aquick win for David on board one and one of the longest games ever witnessed between Luke and Shane, where Shane went from a win to a draw to a loss on time. Actually the most fascinating game was on board 3 between Laurie Dalton and Anurag Sannidhanam The pair had met the week before in the Friday Xmas swiss with a win to Anurag This time Laurie managed to reverse the result. I think laurie had an edge throughout the game but Anurag ever recourceful kept finding good moves almost until the end. Here is the final cross table

BOX HILL CHESS CLUB 55th Birthday Celebration

When the Committee first considered holding a celebration to mark our 55th anniversary of formation the key question was, “Will anyone come to a Chess Club Birthday Celebration?”

Leading up to the day of the celebration, Sunday the 16th of December 2007, there was some nervous organisers as interest was not apparently overwhelming.

However, the enthusiasm of our energetic President, Gladys Liu, is contagious and a good crowd arrived at 5pm to be greeted by fresh seafood salads, hot pizzas, and drinks. Quickly the many juniors settled into playing the social TRANSFER and BLITZ, while seniors such as Scott Sharman, David Flude, Roger Croft, Elliott Renzies, Marcus Raine, Trevor Stanning, and Laurie Dalton played more sedate styles of chess and debated the merits of chess variants.

A definite attraction was a couple of GO players who challenged Derek Yu and Chris Wallis in this Asian board-game, and showed that there is a lot to be learned in the deceptively simple game.

6pm came and it was time for speeches. (And in the background, time for Rachel Siah to order another delivery of pizzas as the good turnout had made short work of the first order).

Gladys highlighted the success of Box Hill CC in the chess community and the blossoming of the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club, which was supported in its formative years by Box Hill.

Gerrit Hartland gave a full history of significant occasions for the Box Hill club.

Gary Wastell, President of the Australian Chess Federation, spoke in appreciation of the teamwork by the Box Hill Committee over many years.

Robert Clark, local State Parliamentary member, said he appreciated how significant it was for a voluntary organisation, such as a chess club, to still be going strong after 55 years.

Then it was time for Gladys to introduce the piece de resistance’, a special cake with the decorations having a chess-board theme, topped by fruit pieces dripped in chocolate and carved as chess pieces. Of course we sang the happy birthday song.

My favourite part of the day was the unveiling of a brand-new honour-board to record Box Hill Chess Club champions and presidents. It is a mighty sight and our thanks to the donors who supported the fund-raising earlier in the year.

I spoke with Elliott Renzies after the ceremonies and he said he had a tear in his eye during the speeches.

A tear of joy at being part of a lovely social occasion.

It was time for farewells and best wishes at 8.30pm.

Well-done Gladys and Rachel and their helpers.

December 9 Rookies and Queens cup by Gerry Hartland

The last of the Rookies and Queens Cup tournaments for 2007 was our best tournament ever. Wonderful crowd and constantly improving juniors. The highly rated Jesse Sales who finished with a picket fence score won the adult section. The Rookies was shared between Rukman Vijayakumar and Nicholas Liu. Sarah Anton again took the Queens Cup.  As predicted the overall Rookies winner was Cedric Antolis and The Queens Cup winner was Sarah Anton.

I would like to thank our sponsor Z chess in the person of George Zaprutsky, who has stood by us throughout the year, Antoinette Ziffer who with her catering and her students took the 2007 tournaments to a new level, Trevor Stanning for his expertise with the entries and Swiss perfect, and the senior members of the club in particular Leon Kempen and David Flude who in their different ways added colour and stability

Issue 2007.29 August 15.

 AUGUST ROOKIES AND QUEENS CUP

Sunday the 12th of August was slow to arrive as a fine drizzle of rain seemed like a lid in the sky of Melbourne. If this were a report on football it would be colloquially known as ‘Game Day’. But for the chess club it matters not, as we just switch the gas heaters on earlier and wait for the entrants to arrive.

I am pleasantly surprised by the early entry of a few strong adult players; the more adults that take advantage of this tourney opportunity the better the rating reliability factor becomes.

Some juniors seem to delight in lodging their entry via the entry form on our web page; this gets them through the queue very quickly.

It soon becomes apparent to me that Toni Ziffer (one of the school coaches) has been active again to drum-up attendance of her students and some accompanying parents. They are always a strong social group and a plus for the tournament.

We have entrants from Mt Eliza (Rhys Hopkins), Pakenham (Vivienca Luong and Eric Tsai-Luong), showing that distance is no real hindrance to the enthusiastic.

For round 1 we code the computer to produce accelerated pairings; which basically means the top see (the #1 seed) plays the 15th seed rather than the 30th seed. This strategy ensures competitive games in round 1. Nevertheless, in the first 8 pairings the higher-rated player wins his/her game. But on board 9 Justin Tan caused an upset against Dmitri Dyson. Justin has had some good results elsewhere recently. There was only one draw in the first round…board 24 Brad Chick v Alexander McGill. A very good contest saw Arun Bhanot take a full point from Punala Jayath Kiripitige.

For round 2 we retained the acceleration on the pairings thus producing some tight pairing contests on the top boards. Samuel Chan upset David Flude on board 4, while Savithri Narenthran did well to defeat Eric Tsai-Luong.

We removed the acceleration code in round 3 and this tends to produce a few one-sided games. On board15 Arun Bharot had a fine win over Sarah Anton; Sarah has been in terrific form in the Noble Park Championship.

In round 4 Max Maddock had his best result by defeating Jusuf Omeragic.

The sensation of round 5 was Leon Kempen’s (1797) win on the top board against Jesse Sales (2101). This threw the tournament wide-open for the first cash prize.

Into the final round and the upsets kept occurring Luke Higham beat Leon Kempen on board 1. Sarah Anton beat David Flude on board 4. Justin Tan drew with Efrain Tionko. Michael Wong defeated Raymond Lok Chan.

At the prize-ceremony we introduced a new award…the Toni Award…for the best placed (bottom-division) newcomer. The trophy was won by Isaac Traill, to the delight of his friends and the photographer.

Full results are available on our web-site.

The second game of the 3 game matches between Bobby Cheng (NZ junior) versus Chris Wallis (Box Hill and Vic Junior champion started with a win to Chris. Bobby will need to make inroads with black this time if he wants to keep his changes alive.

TUESDAY GRADES TOURNAMENT.

INTERCLUB RESULTS
Last Friday was yet another disaster day for Canterbury A losing 4 – 0 again, this time to fellow club members Box Hill A. However Box Hill A remains in the wake of the strong Noble Park team which beat Darkhorse 3.5 - 0.5

Canterbury B is in good shape for the final with a 4 – 0 win over a depleted Darkhorse team. Even with the bye coming up they cannot be beaten out of first. Runner up is still wide open.

C and D grade is hard to pick. There are too many forfeits in this grade and players need to learn that interclub competions are a commitment to the team and unavilability must be announced well in advance so substitutions can be made. Full results are shown on the CV website:  http://chessvictoria.netfirms.com

JULY SUNDAY TOURNAMENT a report

After the huge crowd of 76 players at the June ROOKIES the Committee put their thinking caps on to plan the running of the July ROOKIES event a bit more efficiently. We spent some effort in setting out the Hall differently and having everything ready for play before the crowds arrived. Thanks to Efrain Tionko and a few who arrived early for their assistance.

The field size at the start of the first round was a healthy 46 (always nice to have an even number), and the highest rated player was Jesse Sales (FIDE rating higher than 2000).

But there was a gremlin at work again as our printer refused to print on command. Problem was solved in a couple of minutes and games were underway.

The tea-room was doing good business with Christine Qin attentive to all customers. Thanks for this Christine.

At the prize-giving ceremony at 5pm there were happy faces for

Junior 1 JP Wong (ROOKIE champion for July; eq 2nd Michael Chan and Nathan Wong

Junior 2 Tomson Qin, Jeffrey Jiang, Justin Tan, Adeline Antolis, Max Maddock. (Putting a hole in our trophy stocks).

Junior 3 Punala Kipripitige, Bryan Ng, William Field

Junior 4 Yvonne Kushnir, Michael Zhao, Jonah Fung.

Adult prizes Jesse Sales, Leon Kempen.

AN INTERVIEW BY ELLIOTT RENZIES

To the surprise of many I [Gerry Hartland] gave the following interview to popular club reporter Elliott Renzies. How could I not after his flattering critique of my artwork [see my web site: http://gerryhartland.netfirms.com]

Captain, how long have you been involved with the administration part of Chess?

Since the late 60s when I joined the Box Hill Chess Club.

What was the reason you actually were involved in the first place?

I remember I was made a club delegate for the Box Hill Chess Club for a VCA meeting in Latrobe Street [where the MCC was then] where there was some controversy involving the club the details of which I have long forgotten and I was savaged by John Hanks and Eddy Militias so when election time came my fellow club delegate held up my hand on the assumption that I had to put my money where my mouth was.

Judging from my own experience, you are a strong player, and definitely underrated. Have your administrational duties affected your playing in terms of strength as well as participation?

They have indeed. I have always believed administrators should be given bonus rating points say 100 points every time they get denigrated on chess chat

You are a well-respected personality in the Victorian as well as in the Australian Chess Community… You are working very hard! I mean apart from your duties as President of Chess Victoria, you are the Captain of the Box Hill / Canterbury Juniors Chess Club, a remarkable artist, and a keen traveller! In between you manage to win medals in All Australian Veteran swimming events!!! How do you do it?

Well the swimming is easy in the over 75s.  You dive in one end and if and when you get out the far end they give you a medal. In my case 3 bronze ones.

OK let’s go back to Chess and your duties. You undertook the responsibility of becoming the President of CV at a (for some turbulent, for some others stagnated) stage of affairs. What are your first experiences during that approximately half year since you were elected?

I am discouraged by the lack of interest I have encountered.

Do you think that everything is ok and under control now, or are there still things that need change?

Only a relative small part of our program has been carried out and that has hardly set the world on fire there are many changes that need to be made and many more people who need to become involved

What are your immediate plans for the future as far as the direction of CV is concerned?

My personal ambitions go no further than the next general meeting

It would have been nice to have some more people involved

Now, let’s get back to your other involvement and, I presume, one of the loves of your life, and I am talking about the Box Hill / Canterbury Junior Chess Club. Has the Club recovered yet from the tremendous blow of being in effect “kicked out” from its old base?

The junior club has more than recovered. We have twice as many members twice as many coaching opportunities and twice as many parents in our support group. The Box Hill Chess Club is still in recovery mode, but with our new active committee led by an active and supportive president I think we are getting there.

Are you happy with the new venue?

I am happy with the way the venue is shaping up. However we still struggle with access and the kitchen facilities. I am also satisfied with the use Chess Victoria has been able to make of the premises

Many members of the Victorian Chess Community are simply astounded by the success of certain activities of the Club. We see organised adult coaching, ever-increasing junior classes, people filling the Club’s rooms in every public function, parents actively participating! What is the secret of making the Club so successful in these regards?

It is no secret. It is the drive of our new president who has the ability to work outside the square or should I say outside the 64 squares

Yet, there are claims that the membership has not yet recovered in numbers since the Club left its original well-known base at Box Hill. People are also saying that the Club’s tournaments are not that successful as they used to be! What is your opinion?

That is quite true, although your question should perhaps have read ‘not as successful’ The figures tell their own story The Box Hill open for example since 2004 has attracted these numbers

2004 / 118, 2005 / 104, 2006 / 88 the lowest figure since 2002 when there were 86 entrants.

. When did you first realise that Chess was going to play a part in your life?

Never thought about it

Who were your Chess idols when you started playing serious Chess? Who are your favourite players now?
I liked Euwe, fellow countryman, phlegmatic, gracious, [offered me a draw in a simul], Dutch jokes,

Who was your first Chess mentor?

Did not have one

Did you grow up in Chess playing surroundings?
Certainly not. But I do remember taking a slight interest in Ewe’s battle to regain his world championship title in 1948 was it? Where the poor chap forever seem to be a pawn down at the adjournment

How much support did you have by your family for your Chess activities?
As far as chess is concerned we are ships that pass in the night, although my grand son seems to take an interest. He is however somewhat handicapped by his insistence on putting the white pieces on the white squares and the black pieces on the black squares

What are the greatest achievements of your Chess career?

My draw against Ian Rogers when he was 8

Who do you think is the most influential Chess player of modern times?

I would say Fischer for the way he changed the way people thought about chess

The strongest?

No idea

The one whose playing styles you have been inspired by and have tried to adopt?

Always followed the sound of my own drum, but I do have pet openings like the Morra gambit, The Nimzo indian, the centre counter

The one that you always wanted to meet?

I might let that one go through to the keeper

Who is your favourite Australian Chess player?

Cecil Purdy; I knew him well

Who is Australia’s most promising young player?

I am looking for another Denis Bourmistrov

Would you describe the Chess Chat Forum’s importance for Chess in Australia as major, minor, average?
Elliott, don’t get me started on this. Let us just say I find it amusing.

Captain, thank you very much for your time!
You’re welcome

2007 Box Hill Championship. State of play
D
ue to circumstances beyond my control I agreed to a postponement of  th final round game between Reubban Muthusamy and Chris Wallis. The result of this game will affect the distribution of the prizes. If Chris wins or draws he wins the tournament and bumps Reubban out of the top prizes but leaves Reubban to win B div Leon and Zhigen and Derek to share second and third and Peter Schulzer to win A div. I f however Chris loses Reubban, Chris, Leon, Zhigen, and Derek all share first with an equal share of the prizes and a count-back for the title and Shane Lawson will win B div.
So we can distribute now
C division             Equal first Dimtri Dyson / Alan Glenton
D division             Equal first Sam Zivkovic / James Thomas
E division              First Stuart Cuxson
F division            First Justin Tan

Victorian open Championship

Dates June 9, June 10, June 11. 7 rounds.

If you did not play you missed a wonderful tournament full of excitement and many upsets which featured some of our young and not so young players.

We saw Andrew Gurevich beat Jason Tang in round 1[800 rating points difference]

Stuart Cuxon’s draw with Scott Stewart [700 rating points difference]

And in round 3 Joshua Ng beat Ian Hamilton [600 rating points difference]

And brother Isaac Ng drew with Michael Placentino [450 rating points difference]There was a great escape by Leon Kempen v Joshua Dalton, The wonderful win by James Morris against IM Mirko Rujevic and the magnificient fight by Chris Wallis [ultimately unsuccesful] against IM David Smerdon.

Trevor Stanning had this to say of the last round

Into the last round Chris Wallis was on 6/6 and David Smerdon was on 5.5/6, and would be paired to decide the tournament.

After 90 minutes the crowd around this board was huge, but well disciplined and quiet. Personally, I thought Chris had the situation under full control; even a draw would do.

However, with only 4 (out of 40 games) still to finish, David Smerdon emerged the winner of the game and the tournament. Chris Wallis was a highly creditable second.

Our President, Gladys Liu, introduced

> Gary Wastell, ACF President

> Robert Clark, MLA

> Dick Menting, Chairman of the Bendigo Bank board.

There were thanks to sponsors (and workers) and short speeches and then hands out to collect the prizes.

David Smerdon returned to the limelight for a very nicely constructed speech, and photo. op. for the dignitaries.

The Chess Victoria web site contains a full list of rating and other winners.
